Telnet allows you to connect to other systems on the Internet and utilize a variety of services provided by those sites. For example, you telnet to the Library of Congress to use the electronic card catalogs or telnet to an Internet site you have an account on.
FTP stands for 'File Transfer Protocol'. It is the method that carries out most of the file transfers on the Internet. You use FTP to access large software archives at universities, research centers, companies, and many other sites including our own.
