MultiLink PPP Connections at EZ-Net

EZ-Net now supports MultiLink PPP connections (MP) on all of our digital servers.  Interested in speeding up your Internet access?  MP can help - every user who has MultiLink PPP from EZ-Net has told us "I should have gotten this sooner" - read the following FAQ to learn more about MP at EZ-Net...

Q. What is MP and what does it mean to me, the average Internet user...
A. MP is a special protocol that enables multiple connections to bond together to form ONE logical connection.  The obvious advantage of MP is increased bandwidth.  If you normally connect at 28,800kbps - by bonding two of these connections together with MP you will essentially achieve a 57,600kbps connection the the Internet.  If you normally connect at 44,000kbps - 2 connections bonded with MP would yield 88,000kbps.  This higher connection means your Internet will be faster.

Q. How does that actually affect my Internet activities - what are some examples of real uses of MP?
A. Web surfing will be much faster with twice that bandwidth, and although its tough to measure how fast you surf, it is visibly faster & more responsive.  File downloads, however, ARE easy to measure and should essentially DOUBLE in speed with 2 bonded connections.  If you normally get 3K/second, expect 6K/second with 2 bonded connections... if you normally get 4.5K/second, expect to get 8 or 9K/second with 2 bonded connections.

Q. What do I need to have in order to get MP - what is all involved?
A. Here is a "list" of the things that are necessary for MP:

  • 2 modems to make your Internet connections with - your computer must obviously have the ability to have 2 modems operate simultaneously.  The modems can be of different makes & speeds, but best results are achieved with like modems/speeds.
  • 2 regular telephone lines
  • Windows 95/98 (NT works as well) with Dial-Up Networking 1.2 or later, which has built in support for MP -or- a modem/software package like Diamond's SupraSonic II with Shotgun Technology.  For use with multiple workstations (a small LAN) other hardware solutions are available that work very well such as the Netopia dual analog router which has support for MP - contact us for assistance in this situation.
  • A Multiple Port access account at EZ-Net, which is just $14.95 per month in addition to your regular account fees.  Dedicated MP connections are also available - see our dedicated connections information here.
Q. Where is MP supported in EZ-Net's local coverage area?
A. MP is now available at all of our access points.
