The Semi-Tarrasch differs from the Tarrasch Defense in that both sides have developed the kingside Knights. This eliminates many options for Black, including the sharp Schara Gambit, (in the Tarrasch Defense opening). On the other hand, it also means that Black can reply to cxd5 with ....Nxd5, avoiding the isolated d-pawn. In these cases, it is White who often winds up with the isolated pawn.
