(2) Get a Passed Pawn

Get a Passed Pawn if you can get this position. --------------------------------------------------------- The next position is one that all students should know. This position vividly demonstrates that the power of a passed pawn is often worth more than all the Knights in Columbus and all the Bishops in Rome. A superficial glance at the position would tell us that the two sides are even in material and that the White King is too far away from the action. A deeper look however, suggests that the important point is not the position of the White King but the advanced position of the White Pawns. How can we turn this setup into an advantage? White can gain the advantage by creating a passed pawn! With the first move, advancing the middle pawn, White threatens to capture one of the defending Black Pawns and then to queen on the following move

1.b6
This threat forces black to capture the forward White Pawn. Which pawn black uses to capture white's marauder really doesn't matter.

1...cxb6
White advances another pawn, with the same threat of capturing and queening on the next two moves.

2.a6
Black must capture the attacking White Pawn.

2...bxa6
But now, with White's next move, advancing the remaining pawn, the nature of the overall position is radically altered. White now has a passed pawn, which has a clear path to the queening square.
