Do you have what it takes?

Why is it that most average chess players don't have the discipline, patience, or motivation to become involved in a long-range plan of study and practice to increase their chess skills? The vast majority of chess games played are quick games played with no increments, with the intentions of winning on time, not with superior chess skills. Not the serious standard games with large increments that are played by stronger players.

Many tell me that the reason they play chess is purely for its entertainment and recreational value only, and have no desire at all to work so hard to become serious players and increase their chess skills to the point of becoming skilled players.

However there are a few that claim that they do want to become skilled players and tell me that they would like to join our Saint Emilion Chess Club. But when I tell them that to join our club you must measure up to our high standards of acceptance and go through a lengthy registration process, they then decline.

I suspect that the true reasons are not told when they decline. Some have little intentions to join our club to do the hard work of study and become serious players. They are just curious about what our training materials are all about and just want the chance to quickly look them over. So if all they have to do is obtain a password for the asking they will gladly join our club.

To have the maturity of mind to appreciate and realize what our club has to offer them is of little importance to them. To have the maturity of mind to indulge in serious study to become proud of their accomplishments is of little consequence either.

These are the non-achievers that believe that they can get all that they want in their lifetime for nothing. Why work so hard for that which you can get for nothing is their philosophy towards life. They have most likely never felt the joy, the rush, the warm glow of proud feelings of accomplishment from spending long hours in hard study for anything in their lives, and have no intentions of ever changing that lifestyle.

These are the kinds of lazy, apathetic rejects that demanding organizations like the Marines, Navy Seals, FBI, and sought after prestigious collages quickly throw out also when their true nature becomes apparently obvious.

If on the other hand you feel you have what it takes to measure up to our tough standards of acceptance to join the Saint Emilion Chess Club you may ask for an invitation to be accepted as a member.
