Why I play little Chess at FICS
To any one who is interested in knowing why I have not been playing much chess at FICS, I will now disclose the reasons.
A.
1. My fight with FICS's lax policy on disconnection abusers is one of protest by me and many others who simply will not play chess where the chess server will not set up a zero tolerance for such behavior of people who disconnect in a lost position and get away with actually increasing their points for doing so. How do they do this? To find out all the answers, go to my disconnection abusers web site http://SaintEmilionNet.bravehost.com
But I will say that its entirely possible to do it in many ways when the chess server has such a lax policy towards such offenders. If you let people disconnect who then refuse to resume, and then you ask adjudicate to rule on that game, that disconnector is playing the odds that adjudicate will do one of the following things.
1. First of all adjudicate may not rule for several weeks and meanwhile the person requesting adjudicate may be building up to his limit of 15 stored games. After 15 games you may not play any more until you resolve those games. Every day you hear of people complaining about this and asking what are they to do? And the answer they get most frequently is to resign all 15 of them! Yes resign them. That is exactly what the scumbag disconnecting abuser is counting on. So playing the odds and winning this way gives him incentive to keep doing it not the other way around. So he not the good guy gets the points. Now that is just obscene, and repugnantly indecent. If we had a policy of just giving you 10 minutes to resume the game or you forfeit it, all this disconnection abuse would soon disappear forever. And don't complain to me about buggy connections prevent you from resuming a game in 10 minutes, that rarely ever happens and you know it.
2. Adjudicate does not always award you a deserved win. Many people are now complaining that after waiting 2 weeks, adjudicate just aborted the game or considered it a draw. And so many people who have had this bad experience become so disgusted they just resign it rather than go through that experience again. Apparently adjudicate is so overloaded with requests that in order to get caught up the easiest thing for them to do is not spend the time, that they don't have, looking at games, so they just simply abort them, but not until weeks have gone by.
3. Adjudicate may not honor your request for a win or a draw. Again the easy way out for adjudicate is to not spend precious time looking over a game, and so they simply tell you to resume it. Your opponent now has a choice. Since he may of had a week or even two weeks to study the game, with a computer if he wanted to and no one would know the difference he can now decide if a resume is in his best interest. If not, he can gamble that you may decide to resign it if he just ignores you for some time, may be even until adjudicate tells him to either resume or forfeit the game. And so again he can play the odds that are set up by this server to favor the offender not you. That is simply insane, ludicrous and ridiculous and most other Chess Servers agree with me on this and I can prove it. Just go to my web site and see what their policy is on disconnecting abusers. One Chess Server gives you 10 minutes to resume or forfeit, but another one only gives you three minutes to resume or forfeit the game. They really do abhor disconnector abusers and do indeed have a zero tolerance that they show in deeds not words.
B. There are many people at FICS with severe personality disorders. They get a rush from belittling others when they lose to them. They even have the nerve to say so in Shouts. Naomi does not hide the fact that he really enjoys putting other people down when they lose to him. Apparently he gets such a high from this childish behavior that even after many SR's and others have informed him that such behavior is considered abuse he continues to ignore every one's disgust to the point that now he is asking in shouts why people are censoring him immediately after a game. Where the hell is the administration to put a stop to such abuse? When SR's see such behavior they should immediately copy and paste what he says and send it to abuse and abuse should ban the jerk for a few months. But many do not, and so others who do the same thing look upon his behavior as acceptable. In other Chess Servers such behavior is immediately dealt with by tough sanctions. One Chess Server enables you to rate each player for public display with a rating system. The first category is Fairness. Very Fair, No Evaluation, Tricky, and Unfair. The second category is on Manners: Charming, Nice, No Evaluation, Intimidating, and Abusive. Would such a system eliminate general abuse and disconnecting abuse, may be not but a lot of people would be thinking twice before doing so if they wanted to continue playing chess there or else soon no one would play them.
There is no easy solution to the problem of curtailing disconnection abuse, but I think the best solution is the 10-minuet limit. Either you resume in 10 minutes, or you forfeit the game. It's a very simple idea that every one can understand and remember. And both sides still have options with this. You can give your opponent more time, you can adjourn, and you can abort. You can even resign. If you have a buggy connection you can say so in your finger notes and say that if you are disconnected you will do your best to get back as soon as you can and resume the game. No one has to suffer a loss from this rule. In all my years on the Internet I have never experience a time when I could not get back on line and resume a game within 10 minutes from being disconnected from my server.
This Chess Server is just to lax and irresponsible towards abusers and so now we have to deal with this mess with antiquated ways.
C. Have you any idea of how much abuse goes on with people using computers to assist them with their games? If you want to get some idea just read Reb's finger notes. Reb is a national master who will not play chess here because he says computer use here is wide spread and computer abuse does little to correct it. Again because of the lax policy against abusers they can do mostly what ever they choose to do with impunity.
D. Why is FICS so lax in this policy? It has a lot to do with the old adage that what ever you can get for free is worth just that…. Nothing! People who pay at other Chess Servers would never stand for such a lax policy that they have here. They would soon leave to a Chess Server that is going to give them more for their money. I suspect that FICS would soon decrease their membership by half if they really got tough with abusers, because then these spoiled kids could not get their way any longer. Proofs of this is in the membership at Yahoo Chess where any day you go there you will find thousands of people playing in their rooms. But I bet over 75% or more are young kids who can do most any thing that they want to and no one says that they can't.
E. So It appears that the less supervision you have at a Chess Server the more populated it becomes with abusers. And this has become a real thorn in my side. So I decided that since I don't want to pay for playing chess, the next best thing to do is form my own club where the people in the club are responsible and trustworthy. A place where disconnection abuse is unheard of. A place where the members are your friends and who will treat each other with respect, and best of all it's entirely free.
